Note: This class begins on July, 16th, in the evening from 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm. Then it continues, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 17 - 19, from 10:30 am - 4:30 pm, each day.
Free your wire potential from its cocoon with wire mistress Barb Switzer. Students will learn the skills needed to expand their journey with wire. Master and apply coiling, spirals, weaving, oxidation and precision shaping as you learn the Woven Mariposa Pendant and Butterfly Hinge Chain Bracelet. Whether you're just a beginner or you've worked with wire for a while, Barb will fine tune your skills, teach you to master your tools, build your relationship with wire and discuss how to engineer artful designs for everyday wear.
Day 1 (3 hour evening session): Practice and preparation. Barb will guide the students through making the coils for their projects including a discussion of oxidation, polishing and several options of coiling tools and methods.
Day 2: Butterfly Hinge Chain will utilize wire coils from Day 1 and put the previous days lessons to work. Learn to weave a clever hinge, turn solid corners and make open spiral wings. Students will complete the bracelet during class time.
Day 3: We will use more coils created Thursday night to begin creating the Woven Mariposa. This design features articulated wings and provides a foundation for creating matched pairs. Students will create the body and wing shape for their own custom butterflies and learn a faux filigree technique for detailed, lightweight wings.
Day 4: Learn the art of weaving with small gauge wire and fill your butterfly wings with beads. Student will learn how to attach their butterfly to a chain. Barb will share her favorite finishes and chain styles to enhance each pendant's unique personality.
